Wet Environments & Hygienic Floors
Hygienic Flooring
Health, safety and hygiene should always be high priorities for any business. Hygienic Resin flooring is a reliable and practical flooring solution for many commercial properties due to its durability and resilience. Polyurethane is the most commonly used hygienic resin flooring and is a popular choice in healthcare settings, commercial kitchens and leisure facilities.
Impact is a leading supplier of hygienic flooring and wet environment floors in the UK. Many industries constantly have water on their surface making it essential to introduce a polyurethane or epoxy resin flooring into the workplace. Due to the environment being wet a lot of the time, anti-slip flooring may also be a consideration. We can introduce slopes and falls to your environments as well as new drainage systems to help with any excess water. Polyurethane flooring protects the underlying concrete structure ensuring it does not suffer from water damage.
Polyurethane resin allows you to steam clean the flooring up to 130 degrees, allowing you to remove any product residue or contamination build-up.
Why use a Polyurethane Flooring?
Generally applicable to the food industry and very beneficial to others, we recommend that a polyurethane resin flooring screed system be used in wet areas and for hygienic floors. These systems, applied at thicknesses of 6-12mm offers benefits including:
- Hygienic Floors
- Extremely hard wearing
- Seamless and non-porous
- Can include falls for liquid ‘run off’
- Anti-slip
- Can include a coved skirting for a smooth floor to wall transition
Why is Hygienic Resin Flooring Right for your Business?
Hygenic resin flooring is necessary for particular commercial environments due to a number of crucial factors. Primarily, hygienic resin flooring is well known for being much easier to clean than traditional flooring materials. The installation process creates a smooth, durable and seamless surface that is able to withstand the rigours of intense cleaning on a regular basis. As a result, resin flooring provides a long-term solution for hygienic and wet environments requiring frequent washing. Resin flooring is also an ideal alternative to other coatings that cannot withstand harsh chemicals or high temperatures.
Resin flooring has properties that make it very different to traditional flooring materials, which often contain cracks or seams that collect dirt and contaminates. Water and other liquids will not penetrate a resin flooring surface as it is a non-porous material, making it well suited to commercial settings that require regular cleaning or environments where there is often surface water. Traditional flooring can result in unhygienic environments when the materials are not well suited to the industry. Where this occurs, businesses face avoidable costs for additional cleaning, repairs or even replacements
Benefits of Hygienic Flooring
Appearance
Hygienic flooring can be as functional or as decorative as you like.
For example, epoxy flooring is available in various textures and colours. It can even incorporate additions such as quartz pieces or a metallic finish but is limited by its heat and chemical sensitivities. On the other hand, polyurethane still benefits from being available in a wide range of textures and colours but is also tremendously versatile, heavy-duty and functional.
Easy to Clean
Resin floors are seamless, so they do not provide any dirt traps for bacteria to flourish. They can also be installed with curved coved skirting to avoid similar dirt traps where the floor meets the wall. This feature makes resin floors exceptionally well suited to commercial environments with harsh cleaning schedules and can even stand up to pressure washing and steam cleaning.
Antimicrobial
Hygienic resin flooring can be installed with an antimicrobial coating making it the perfect application in medical settings. The unique properties of an antimicrobial floor will impair bacteria growth and help reduce the adhesion of mould and mildew.
Resistant to Stains & Water
An appealing benefit of hygienic resin flooring is its ability to resist stains from spillages, accidents, and flooding. This makes it suitable for settings such as commercial kitchens, which may need to deal with hot spillages or leisure facilities such as spas that get a lot of chlorinated water left on their surface.
Resistant to Shock
Hygienic resin flooring is exceptionally durable, hard-wearing and shock-resistant. The sudden impact from falling tools or stock that would chip, crack or erode other types of flooring will not damage resin flooring.
Resistant to Heat
Polyurethane resin is ideal for commercial kitchens and bakeries due to its heat resistance. A standard polyurethane floor can withstand temperatures up to 93 degrees celsius. However, special formulations can extend the performance of polyurethane floors even further to resist temperatures up to 150 degrees celsius
Resistant to Chemicals
The non-porous nature of polyurethane resin makes it resistant to stains and damage caused by chemicals, making it an ideal solution for use in laboratories or pharmaceutical manufacture.
Hygienic Flooring Installation
Installation of hygienic resin flooring can be accomplished with relative speed and ease.
The self-sealing resin can be installed up to the level of existing drainage grates, grilles and grids to ensure water can run off efficiently.
Anti-slip topcoats are available to reduce the risk of slips and accidents, ensuring a safer environment for employees and service users.
Coloured resin or epoxy paints can be utilised to mark designated zones, machinery pathways, and loading bays, as well as stencils to highlight health and safety areas such as fire exits and pedestrian walkways.
Choose a Colour that Suits You
All of the flooring systems that we install are available in a range of standard colours. (See colour chart) However, any RAL or BS colour can be manufactured to order to provide bespoke requirements, for example your corporate colours.
